Big Tobacco is setting a spending record. R.J. Reynolds and Philip Morris have already put down $4.5 million for deceptive TV and radio ads — potentially the biggest media buy in Oregon history for a ballot measure.The American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association and the American Lung Association joined with Healthy Kids Oregon today to launch a new campaign. The goal? To warn Oregonians about the onslaught of deceptive advertising that’s coming soon — and to urge ordinary citizens to fight back against these millions of out-of-state dollars.
We are calling on Oregonians to click three times:

First, click off the TV or radio whenever a tobacco ad airs;

Next, click on the Healthy Kids Oregon website (http://activeresource.org/wordpress/www.healthykids-oregon.org), where your tobacco ad “click off” will be counted.

Then, click once more to automatically send an electronic postcard to R.J. Reynolds and Philip Morris world headquarters telling them, “Our kids are more important than your profits. Butt out of Oregon!”

“We’re calling on Oregonians to stand up and take action to protect the health of our kids against Big Tobacco’s millions of dollars,” said Courtni Dresser, spokesperson for the American Cancer Society and Policy Director for the Healthy Kids Oregon campaign.

Measure 50, the Healthy Kids Initiative, will provide health coverage to 100,000 uninsured Oregon children and double the budget of the effective Tobacco Education and Prevention Program (TPEP). In addition to being supported by the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association and the American Lung Association, Measure 50 is supported by a long list of nurses, doctors, child and health advocates and Oregon businesses, including the Oregon Business Association and the Portland Business Assocation. To date, all of the funding for the opposition to Measure 50 has been from tobacco giants R.J. Reynolds and Philip Morris.
