Victory in Iraq?

tim | Everything... | Wednesday, November 29th, 2006

There will be no “victory” in Iraq until we begin a real discussion about
the elephant in the room.  The so-called government we have imposed
on Iraq is a conglomeration of CIA operatives, con-men, pretenders, and thieves.
Their so-called constitution is a license for transnational corporations to take over
or sell off the natural resources of Iraq.
Until this administration stops using our military as mercenaries in support of this
corporate cartel, our service people will continue to be targets in Iraq.

At a risk of belaboring the obvious, we must renegotiate this corporate welfare.  In the American
tradition, we should put the contracts for reconstruction, infrastructure, and redevelopment out
to open bid which includes all of our allies… as well as Iraq, her neighbors, and her people.

Those who win in this more equitable and just bidding process, can provide support, both
military and humanitarian, while our troops are redeployed.  This is the only “victory”
available in this illegal war for retro-colonialism.  It time to let go of the past and build
bridges for a peaceful and productive future.

We are not the world’s policemen and “nation-building” can only be accomplished from within.
If we give Iraq back to her people, under the protection of open international investments in
stability, their middle class can return and American can begin repairing the damage both
in Iraq and at home.

The “Librul” Press in Amerika..

tim | Everything... | Thursday, November 9th, 2006

To those who suffer under the misapprehension that our corporate press is ”liberal.”

Regarding your questionable thesis, we will simply have to respectfully disagree…

I will certainly not wade through all the weird blogs, huffing and puffing vitriol, and propaganda which attempts to present its bias as “objectivity.”

Here is my most current take on the subject of the mythical “liberal press” promulgated by Rovian rhetoraticians, rabble-rousing syncophants, and the odd bloggers who follow their talking points.

I think that most reporters and writers in the US media are understandably liberal. This is a liberal nation. It is our liberal traditions and commitment to human rights and dignity which allowed us to declare our nationhood and, over time, to stand tall and proud as a beacon for freedom. Democrats and Republicans proudly share this liberal tradition. http://activeresource.org/wordpress/archives/12

Having said that… there is a clear difference between those who write the news and those who publish it. The owners of the presses, wire services, magazines, newspapers, and broadcasting stations are the ones who determine what gets published, broadcast, or delivered as news. These owners are, for the most part, not liberal. In fact, the vast majority are apologists for George Bush at worst… and uninterested in providing real journalism at best.

You may believe otherwise, but reality persists.

Was Richard Milhous Nixon villified, or was his behavior his undoing?

tim | Everything... | Thursday, November 9th, 2006

Mr. Nixon was not ”villified.”
He was unbalanced.  His state of mind
led him to do unseemly things which eventually forced
him to resign.  It was a sad disintegration.
I thought his resignation was unfortunate.
It was an incredible loss for heartbroken comedians across
the globe who no longer had Nixon to kick around anymore.
His stand-up act was one of the best in the business.
He was even a hit on laugh-in.
I think that all of us, even those who understood
how much his behavior hurt this nation, had sympathy for
his plight.  Mental illness is not a laughing matter.
~~Tim

“Nixon was a crook. He did not have friends, only cronies and sycophants. He confused nobility with pomposity and courage with bullying. He was a vain, envious, self-pitying, intellectually lazy man who lusted for power without any pressing desire to do anything with it. What he did in and about Vietnam, Cambodia, Bangladesh, Greece, Chile and much of the rest of the world was not only cruel, not only contemptible, but actually evil.”   pnotley@hotmail.com

The Election on Empire
The National Interest Online - Washington,DC,USA
Nowadays, names like Guantanamo, Haditha, Fallujah, and Abu Ghraib become even more powerful icons of unjust, unchecked power requiring a response.

Less ignorance about the colonial context and history would help. But like TR with the Philippines, Bush has found his own “heel of Achilles” in Iraq and has been doggedly unwilling to extricate himself—and the nation. Although it remains to be seen whether he will be influenced, as he should be, by the belated popular counsel expressed in the election, the national interest depends on his doing so. And unlike prior imperial periods, this one is different because everyone—and I mean everyone—is watching.

The Democratic Agenda…

reach as many people as possible.

your polling place. You can call, or find your state’s polling information here: http://www.democrats.org/pollingplace

Last-Minute Volunteers The best way to volunteer at the last minute is to call your local Democratic Party: http://www.democrats.org/volunteer/

Voter Protection Info: http://www.democrats.org/voterprotection/

What do the Republicans offer us? Spiraling costs in both human and monetary terms with no accountability and no plan in sight for Iraq, more people working full-time just to live in poverty because the minimum wage hasn’t changed in a decade, and more people suffering in silence because, just like 45 million others, they don’t have health insurance.
The vast majority of Americans have had enough. That’s why the Republicans have resorted to doing anything they can to distract or deceive voters.

But we Democrats have our own plans, which couldn’t be clearer: Honest Leadership & Open Government We will end the Republican culture of corruption and restore a government as good as the people it serves.

Real Security & A New Direction in Iraq We will protect Americans at home and lead the world by telling the truth to our troops, our citizens and our allies, and we will heed the advice of our commanders on the ground and force a change in the failed Republican strategy in Iraq.

Energy Independence & Lower Gas Prices We will create a cleaner, greener and stronger America by reducing our dependence on foreign oil, eliminating billions in subsidies for oil and gas companies and developing energy alternatives.

More Jobs, Better Pay & College Access for Everyone We will create jobs that stay in America, raise the minimum wage, and open the doors to college for every American.

Healthcare that Works for Everyone & Life-Saving Cures We will join 36 other industrialized nations in making sure everyone has access to affordable health care, and we will make decisions to invest in stem cell and other medical research based on science, not politics.

Retirement Security We will ensure that a retirement with dignity is the right and expectation of every single American, starting with protecting workers’ pensions expanding saving incentives and preventing the privatization of social security. I can’t stress enough how important these final hours are — and because of the Republican voter suppression tactics, every one of us will need to do even more. If you or someone you know has any trouble voting or is harassed in any way, please take down as many details as possible and report it.

You can report any voter suppression or election irregularities by calling 1-888-DEM-VOTE. You can also report problems online here: http://www.democrats.org/voterprotection/report

tim | Everything... | Sunday, November 5th, 2006

On the morning of September 11th, 2001, I watched the attack on the
World Trade Center with a special horror because the people killed were
all civilians without training, arms, or defense. I called my unit that
afternoon and begged, ”Wherever this came from, send me there.”
But that’s not where they sent me. They sent me to Iraq.

Around a month into my tour, my small unit was ambushed by hundreds of
insurgent fighters at a Coalition Provisional Authority base. The local
security force (hired by corporate mercenaries) deserted immediately,
taking guns and radios with them.

We were besieged for 22 straight hours under a steady stream of small
arms fire and rocket propelled grenades. Forces from multiple nations
attempted rescues throughout the night. At dawn, when morning prayers
created a pause in the attack, we managed to escape with our lives.

I spent the next 11 months doing convoys, writing reports, and getting
to know the real Iraq. I talked to hundreds of Iraqis; many became true
friends. I saw the rage after Abu Ghraib. And I saw way too many
innocent civilians die as the country slipped further and further over
the edge.

The troops I served with suffered from limited ammunition, armor,
resources, and staff. While we brushed our teeth in dirty water
recycled from the showers, Halliburton reps got rich off contracts
handed to them by their Republican friends back in Washington.

Reservists like me risk our lives when Congress says we must—and we
need citizens like you to hold them accountable when they betray that
trust.

This Tuesday is our very last chance to do that. It’s the last chance
for Americans to stand up and say we will not forget, we will not
excuse, and we will not let this betrayal happen again.

For my fellow troops still in the field, for the thousands who have yet
to put on the uniform, and for the hopes we all have for a peaceful
world—it’s time to Call for Change.

Respectfully,

–Ginmar, concerned citizen

Spare us the thuggery…  We have heard it for six years. These attacks
on American families by the right wing are getting old…

“Be afraid, be very afraid.”

What crap.  Behaviors like muddying the waters, along with
lies, fear-mongering, mud-slinging, and character assassination…
are standard Republican tactics.  And always have been.

You know it, I know it, America knows it and the whole world is watching.
Get real.

Are we better off with unending war, skyrocketing deficits, net job losses,
hundreds of thousands of casualties, deteriorating infrastructure, dirtier
water and air, suspension of the rule of law, abrogation of constitutional
authority, demonstrated incompetence, and studied ignorance?
