Barak Obama on the Iraq War

tim | Everything... | Saturday, December 30th, 2006

As the New Year approaches, we are told that the President is considering the deployment of tens of thousands of additional troops to Iraq in the desperate hope of subduing the burgeoning civil war there.

This is a chilling prospect that threatens to compound the tragic mistakes he has already made over the last four years.

In 2002, I strongly opposed the invasion of Iraq because I felt it was an ill-conceived venture which I warned would “require a U.S. occupation of undetermined length, at undermined cost, with undetermined consequences.” I said then that an invasion without strong international support could drain our military, distract us from the war with al-Qaeda in Afghanistan and further destabilize the Middle East.

As I said more than a month ago, while some have proposed escalating this war by adding thousands of more troops, there is little reason to believe that this will achieve these results either. It’s not clear that these troop levels are sustainable for a significant period of time, and according to our commanders on the ground, adding American forces will only relieve the Iraqis from doing more on their own. Moreover, without a coherent strategy or better cooperation from the Iraqis, we would only be putting more of our soldiers in the crossfire of a civil war.

There is no military solution to this war. Our troops can help suppress the violence, but they cannot solve its root causes. And all the troops in the world won’t be able to force Shia, Sunni, and Kurd to sit down at a table, resolve their differences, and forge a lasting peace. In fact, adding more troops will only push this political settlement further and further into the future, as it tells the Iraqis that no matter how much of a mess they make, the American military will always be there to clean it up.

That is why I believe we must begin a phased redeployment of American troops to signal to the government and people of Iraq, and others who have a stake in stabilizing the country - that ours is not an open-ended commitment. They must step up. The status quo cannot hold.

In November, the American people sent a resounding message of change to the President. But apparently that message wasn’t clear enough.

I urge all Americans who share my grave concerns over this looming decision to call, write or email the President, and make your voices heard. I urge you to tell them that our soldiers are not numbers to add just because someone couldn’t think of a better idea, they are our sons and daughters, our brothers and sisters, our neighbors and friends who are willing to wave goodbye to everything they’ve ever known just for the chance to serve their country. Our men and women in uniform are doing a terrific job under extremely difficult conditions. But our government has failed them so many times over the last few years, and we simply cannot afford to do it again. We must not multiply the mistakes of yesterday, we must end them today.

May this New Year bring a turn in our policy away from the stubborn repetition of our mistakes, so we can begin to chart a conclusion to this painful chapter in our history and bring our troops home.

Sincerely,
U.S. Senator Barack Obama

The War In Iraq Costs U.S. military forces had to kill Iraqi people – in fact, large numbers of Iraqi people – people whose government never attacked the United States. The estimates of the number of Iraqi dead range from a “low” of 30,000, provided by President Bush,
to a high of 650,000, provided by researchers at Johns Hopkins University.

Bush said to be cool on Blair’s peace plan

tim | Everything... | Monday, December 18th, 2006

WASHINGTON, Dec. 18 (UPI) — Indications in Washington suggest U.S. President George Bush will ignore British Prime Minister Tony Blair’s Middle East peace plan, The Times of London says.

Sources told the paper’s Washington correspondent that Bush is poised to ignore Blair’s contention that resolving the Israeli-Palestinian dispute would open doors to solving other problems in the Middle East, including Iraq.

The sources said the Bush administration regards them as separate and unrelated problems and said Bush would also likely ignore advice from the Iraq Study Group, which called for gradual U.S. troop reductions in Iraq.

Instead, the newspaper said Bush is expected to announce the deployment of 50,000 more troops to Iraq in a bid to quell the Shiite-Sunni sectarian fighting and expedite training of Iraq’s own security forces.

21360I think we need someone like Mr. Obama who can lead
from a conjunction of conservative ideas, moral principles,
and liberal American traditions. He has the intelligence
and humility to seek the counsel of those who can help
solve the problems we face. He can reach the American
people, touch them, and reconnect them with civic-
engagement and hope. His calls for equity, economic
justice, and nonpartisan commitment to revitalization
of the American dream through popular reform
are the essence of populism which can win this election
and turn this nation around. He is at least a contender.
And he may be our best shot at victory.

Winning in Iraq and losing faith in America

The president is right for the wrong reason:

tim | Everything... | Sunday, December 17th, 2006

iraqFailure is not an option because it has already been secured.  America will never be allowed to establish permanent bases in Iraq.  America will never be allowed to control Iraqi oil. And whatever form of government evolves in Iraq, it will be one of their own choosing. The Vietnamese fought against foreign invaders for centuries before securing independence.
Are the Iraqis so very different?  How many lives are we prepared to sacrifice to find out?  How many lives must be sacrificed before America can admit: We are wrong?  How many more must we ask to give their lives for this mistake?
You cannot convert wrong to right by prolonging the occupation.  You can only increase the cost in lives, money, and the respect of all nations. You can only fuel the fires of our true enemies and further alienate our true friends.Let us undo the harm insofar as it can be undone.
Let us use our resources not for weapons but to rebuild the nations we have destroyed.
Let us make amends as best we can. Let us admit wrong and withdraw our troops.
Let us pledge our support to the United Nations.  At this critical juncture,
we can do little else.

Iraq Report: “A Giant Step Sideways”
The Iraq Study Group may not have a solution for how to end the war,
but it does have a way for its corporate friends to make money.

Winning in Iraq
All of these important people with their lifetimes of experience and high level educations seem to me to be missing the whole point. Iraq is going badly they all say. We are losing the war. All the time Bush and his oily friends are laughing all the way to the bank. Bush says he is winning the war in Iraq. Perhaps we should listen to him and figure out what the objective really is. It appears to me that the purpose of invading Iraq has nothing to do with WMD or democracy or getting rid of Saddam Hussein. Look at all the people getting extremely rich off this war. Look at the history of the Bush family. They have been involved in war profiteering for generation after generation. It’s a family tradition. I have believed all along that Bush is being truthfull when he claims that things are going well in Iraq. Oil companies and defense contractors have never had it so good. By the time Bush leaves office, these companies will have all the money in the world and what happens in Iraq won’t matter to them in the slightest.CashMoney

Barak Obama on the Issues…

tim | Everything... | Tuesday, December 12th, 2006

http://www.ontheissues.org/Senate/Barack_Obama.htm

On the Issues

To find out more about specific issues,
use the links below. You will find Senator
Obama’s positions, actions, and links to legislation

Defense

With the nation facing unprecedented threats, our military needs to remain the world’s best. We must adapt the Pentagon to face 21st century threats such as global terrorists and loose nuclear weapons in the former Soviet states. Senator Obama is working to ensure that the nation’s defense capabilities are strong, agile, and prepared and that our troops are provided with the equipment they need.

Seniors

As we transition to an increasingly global economy, many Americans are at risk of being left behind through no fault of their own. Among those most affected by these changes are senior citizens, many of whom are on fixed incomes. We need to modernize our social safety net to help senior citizens meet these new challenges, but we also must preserve those elements, such as Social Security and Medicare, that have enabled us to fulfill our moral commitments to our parents and grandparents.

Crime

Senator Obama is a strong proponent of tougher measures to fight crime, in particular the growing problem of methamphetamines, which has ravaged many communities in Illinois. He has also advocated providing more resources to local law enforcement officers.

Environment

As a member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, Senator Obama has worked to ensure our nation’s environmental laws and policies balance America’s needs for a healthy, sustainable environment with economic growth.

Homeland Security

Senator Obama believes that greater attention needs to be paid to the nation’s homeland security. To that end, he has supported efforts to distribute more funds to cities like Chicago most at risk of a terrorist attack. He has also introduced legislation to strength chemical plant and drinking water security and to enhance disaster preparedness.

Immigration

Senator Obama shares the growing public concern about illegal immigration in the United States. The challenge facing President Bush and Congress is how to effectively stop the flow of illegal immigrants across our borders, better manage immigration flows going forward, and deal with illegal aliens who are already living and working in this country.

Education

Senator Obama is committed to providing every American with the opportunity to receive a quality education, from pre-kindergarten to college or vocational school to job retraining programs.

Health Care

Promoting affordable, accessible, and high-quality health care was a priority for Barack Obama in the Illinois State Senate and is a priority for him in the United States Senate. He believes firmly that health care should be a right for everyone, not a privilege for the few.

Veterans

As a member of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, Senator Obama is committed to helping the heroes who defend our nation today and the veterans who fought in years past.

Ethics and Lobbying Reform

Throughout his political career, Barack Obama has been a leader in fighting for open and honest government. During his first year as an Illinois State Senator, he helped lead the fight to pass Illinois’ first ethics reform bill in 25 years. As a U.S. Senator, he has spearheaded the effort to clean up Washington in the wake of the Jack Abramoff scandal

Talking Points on How and Why to End the War
Political Affairs Magazine, NY - Dec 5, 2006

… The majority of Americans oppose the war …
A majority of UStroops in Iraq say they do not know
what purpose the war is serving and …
The vast majority of Iraqis … want their country back.
http://www.politicalaffairs.net/article/articleview/4506/1/226/

There will be no “success” in Iraq as long as we occupy and exploit a
nation and people against their will, and against the will of the American
miiltary in the field.  82% of Iraqis are “strongly opposed” to the
presence of coalition troops and 67%  of Iraqis feel less secure because
of the occupation.  http://www.telegraph.co.uk/

A recent Zogby poll of US soldiers in Iraq reported that 72%
thought all troops should withdraw this year

The majority of Americans oppose the war, believe
it has made them less safe, and want complete
or partial withdrawal immediately.
http://www.politicalaffairs.net/article/articleview/4506/1/226/

That Bush chooses to ignore these realities
contradicts every American tradition.
It is time to give Iraq back to her people.

The war-profiteering no-bid, cost-plus,
contracts on the American and Iraqi people
must be ended and those who negotiated
them and entered into this occuption of
choice must be held accountable.

This is the only “success” possible.

On the Smith Conversion

tim | Everything... | Monday, December 11th, 2006

In practical terms, Gordon Smith’s rejection of the Bush policy
is helpful.  It is apparent that Mr. Smith wants to distance himself
from Mr. Bush, while maintaining deniability regarding his own culpability…
but I appreciate his belated “courage.”

At least Mr. Smith is capable of learning, however much that edification
might be precipitated by self-interest.  I thank him for his rejection of |
the Bush Administration’s misguided policies.

Perhaps this will help us build a coalition of responsible conservatives,
pragmatic liberals, and concerned citizens from across the political and
cultural spectrum.  We can take back this country from right-wing
extremists who have betrayed our nation, troops, and people.

When it comes to Mr. Smith and his constituants…  he failed to serve
and protect them.  His partisan blinders allowed our troops to be put
in harm’s way for the wrong reasons.  I do not see how any reasonable
citizen could in good conscience vote to reelect someone who has
participated in what he admits are potentially criminal acts which represent
a dereliction of duty and at best an ethical conundrum.

Having said that, his public statements provide a useful
public service.  His personal ambitions happen to intersect a
critical area which begs more civic-engagement.  His willingness
to make himself vulnerable to attacks by the right-wing extreme
is appreciated, in that it may inspire other conservatives to
reconsider what is best for this nation.

Recent polls of our troops are enlightening

tim | Everything... | Monday, December 11th, 2006

1. An overwhelming majority of 72% of American troops serving in Iraq
think the U.S. should exit the country within the next year, and more
than one in four say the troops should leave immediately,
a new LeMoyne College/Zogby International survey shows.

2. 89% of reserves and 82% of those in the National Guard said
the U.S. should leave Iraq within a year

3. Eric A. Seitz, a Honolulu attorney who has handled military cases
for more than 40 years, said: “The kinds of resistance and opposition
and outrage that military people are now beginning to express has been
simmering for quite a while. But it’s about to just burst out in huge
waves.”

…If dissent continues to build, more soldiers might refuse to fight,
Seitz said. Pentagon officials might “think they can continue to
prosecute a war, but when the troops stop fighting, that’s it, they’re
out of luck,” he said.

4. Opposition to this administration’s obsession with corporate
hegemony is not restricted to the occupation and exploitation of Iraq:

Pentagon opposes Bush’s latest war plans
President George W. Bush has run into a new enemy in his efforts to
launch yet another war. Military leaders in the Pentagon oppose his
efforts to bomb and …

5. Our Veterans, the ones who have been making sacrifices while
Cheney and Bush told us to go shopping, have spoken:

“We ask that you support our troops, by demanding that they be brought
home from Iraq immediately. We ask that you support our nation’s vital
interests, by demanding that our troops should never be placed in
harm’s way except to meet and defeat any direct and immediate threat to
our people.”

calling for just such a critical self-examination.

Among the very first canaries to venture into the
deteriorating mineshaft of postwar American culture
was the writer Flannery O’Connor. “If you live today,”
she observed with characteristic bluntness a half-century ago, “y
ou breathe in nihilism.”

O’Connor correctly diagnosed the disease, and other

observers bore witness to its implications.
Her fellow Southerner Walker Percy wondered if freedom

American-style was not simply becoming
the “last and inalienable possession in a sick society.”   The social critic Christopher Lasch derided “the ideology of progress” manipulated by
elites contemptuous of the ethnic, social, and religious traditions to
which ordinary folk subscribed. Lasch foresaw an impending “dark night
of the soul.” From his vantage point, Robert Nisbet detected the onset
of what he called “a twilight age,” marked by “a sense of cultural
decay, erosion of institutions…and constantly increasing
centralization-and militarization-of power.” In such an age, he warned,
“representative and liberal institutions of government slip into
patterns ever more imperial in character….Over everything hangs the
specter of war.” Towering above them all was Pope John Paul II who, in
a message clearly directed toward Americans, pointedly cautioned that a
democracy bereft of values “easily turns into a thinly disguised
totalitarianism.”
Our own self-induced confusion about freedom, reflected in our debased
culture and our disordered economy, increases our susceptibility to
this totalitarian temptation even as it deadens our awareness of the
danger it poses. Escaping its clutches will require something more than
presidents intoning clichés about America’s historic mission while
launching crusades against oil-rich tyrants on the other side of the
globe. We are in difficult straits and neither arms (already fully
committed) nor treasure (just about used up) will get us out. Our
corrupt age requires reformation.

Shedding or at least discrediting the spurious conceptions of freedom
to which Americans have lately fallen prey qualifies as a large task.
Still, when compared to the megalomania of those who under the guise of
“eliminating tyranny” are intent on remaking the entire Islamic world,
the restoration of our own culture appears to be a positively modest
goal. At the end of the day, as William Pfaff has observed, “The only
thing we can remake is ourselves.”

And who knows? Should we, as a consequence of such a reformation,
actually live up to our professed ideals-restoring to American freedom
something of the respect that it once commanded-we may yet become, in
some small way, a model worthy of emulation.

The erosion of American influence in Iraq

As the Iraqi civil war has evolved, the ability of the Bush
administration to control the course of events has steadily eroded.
That was probably the major reason for going through the motions of
‘restoring sovereignty’ to the Iraqi government. By discarding the
“occupation” label – the United States absolved itself of the legal
obligation to provide security for the citizens of its Iraqi colony.

The United States military began withdrawing from Iraq two years ago.
The majority of American troops never leave their fortified bases.  And
the primary mission of the troops in Iraq is force protection.  Bush
and Rumsfeld have publicly declared that they have no intention of
intervening in a civil war that they refuse to acknowledge even exists.

So why continue deploying 150,000 military personnel at a cost of two
billion dollars a week? Because Bush and his collaborators in both
parties can’t figure a face saving way to reach the exit door. Just
today, he was still blaming all his troubles on Al Qaeda – a force that
didn’t exist in Iraq before the invasion.

Leaving Iraq under the control of a government run by the leaders of
the same Iranian trained militias that operate the death squads also
poses a challenge. Partition or no partition – Iran will emerge as the
dominant force in the region.

The Gulf monarchs who actively backed and facilitated the neo-con
inspired invasion are visibly shaken by the results of their folly. No
one has ever accused the Machiavellian custodians of the oil
plantations of being the brightest bulbs in the room.

Feith and Wolfowitz are long gone. No matter – the damage they intended
to inflict on Iraq is done. They are definitely entitled to hang up the
‘mission accomplished’ sign.  Their Prime Minister – Ehud Olmert – is
obviously satisfied with the results. During his official visit to the
United States on November 13th, he thanked Bush for the Mess on
Potamia. “We in the Middle East have followed the American policy in
Iraq for a long time, and we are very much impressed and encouraged by
the stability which the great operation of America in Iraq brought to
the Middle East.”

Bush also had kind words for Olmert. “The whole central thrust of our
discussions was based upon our understanding that we’re involved in an
ideological struggle between extremists and radicals versus people who
just simply want to live in peace.” Just a few months ago, Olmert and
Bush teamed up to inflict a whole bunch of peace on Lebanon.

Exiting Iraq without Bush

Where Bush goes from here is anybody’s guess. This empty shell of a man
is susceptible to the last idea whispered in his ear – so long as it
conforms to his shallow understanding of a fantasy world that exists
only in his imagination. His ignorance and ineptitude are dwarfed only
by his ego. We have an extremist in the White House who, after six
years of neo-con indoctrination, is incapable of making rational
judgments. The president is still immersed in delusions about leading
victory parades down Pennsylvania Avenue.  He is willing to expend
whatever amount of blood and treasure necessary to leave Iraq in the
lap of the next occupant of the White House.

The quickest way out of Iraq is impeachment. Elizabeth de la Vega has
just published a book titled “United States v. George W. Bush et al.”
The former federal prosecutor is an expert at trying fraud cases. Read
her book and you will walk away convinced that she has a closed and
shut case proving that Bush and Cheney committed fraud against the
American people to launch this war of choice.

After reading the book, don’t put it away. Walk it down to your
congressional representative and ask them for a book report.  Better
yet, get your book club to read the book and take your pals along for a
visit to your Senator.

While you’re waiting for the impeachment hearings, have the Senate
intelligence committee resume its investigation of Douglas Feith. The
pre-election Republican dominated committee has already blocked that
probe for over a year. Now that the Democrats are in control, let’s see
if Hillary Clinton is interested in the truth before she invades the
White House with her own hand picked team of neo-cons.

In the meantime, follow this link and see why Elizabeth de la Vega is
about to rock America by blasting Bush et al out of the White House.

The State of the Union: December 2006

tim | Everything... | Monday, December 4th, 2006

We have won the battle, but the war continues.

Troops are dying every day. Habeas Corpus is history.

The constitution has been suspended.

The lame duck decider is still in charge,
and he still does not get it.

He thinks victory in Iraq is an operative term.

There is good news. Bolton may be history and Rumsfeld is gone.
Nancy Pelosi stands firm with the American people who voted on November 7…

But Rumsfeld’s replacement is little improvement.
Bush continues to ignore reality, professional opinion,
and the American voter. America’s downward spiral
has not been arrested.

Deficits at home and occupation abroad remain
dark clouds which hide the sun.

While Mr. Bush may be “toast,” he and his ilk are still scamming
the American taxpayer, ignoring constitutional mandates, and
destroying our relationships with our neighbors.

Perhaps the most positive spin I can find is that Bush
and his cohorts serve as impressive advertisements for
change. Their experiment has failed.

And the whole world is watching.

Bush, Maliki and That Memo

tim | Everything... | Saturday, December 2nd, 2006

bushsmirkEditorial: Bush, Maliki and That Memo - 1 day ago

……….The president’s performance this week —
his refusal to impose any deadlines on Mr. Maliki
to start reconciliation talks and break with the militias,
and his refusal to give the Pentagon a deadline to
stand up an effective Iraqi Army
— tells us once again that Mr. Bush does not listen.
……….Mr. Bush’s lack of curiosity was well known even before he
became president, but as time has gone on and bad news has mounted,
that disinterested quality has turned into a stubborn refusal to hear
bad news. The country simply cannot afford it any longer. Three years
of having Mr. Bush trust only his gut has plunged Iraq into bloody
chaos and done untold damage to America. There needs to be an urgent
change in policy.
………The president’s advisers need to tell him all the harsh truths
about Iraq in the vivid terms they require; they need to tell him how
little time he has left to act. This administration has been
orchestrating a foreign policy disaster of epic proportions, and
history will remember both that the president failed to hear the
warning bells and that many others failed to ring them loudly enough.
