The Mayor’s Dream: Portland Oregon…

tim | Everything... | Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

From OregonLive.com - Portland,OR,USA on Tuesday, March 27
 ”It’s unions vs. business in heavyweight election bout”

“Politically speaking, unions benefit from a system in which five
elected officials share power. Even if the mayor isn’t a strong labor
supporter, …
…Labor unions now have three good friends on the City Council:
Commissioner Erik Sten has pushed a kinder, more cooperative approach
to contract negotiations with Portland firefighters; Commissioner Sam
Adams has pledged to block another Wal-Mart from Portland, in part,
because of the retailing giant’s anti-union practices; and Commissioner
Randy Leonard worked as a union negotiator before his political career.”

~~~ in response:
If I recall correctly, it was a ”Mayor Potter” who ruined lives in
“It’s a Wonderful Life.”  Rather than allowing Portland’s Mayor Potter
to go down that road, it would behoove us to appreciate the lives we
have and retain the access we have which allows us to have a voice in
how our city is run.  Portland is a city that works.
Let’s keep it that way!
Close the Guantanamo Prison: Return to the rule of law
tim | Everything... | Monday, March 26th, 2007
http://www.angelfire.com/blues/writing/gitmoupdate.html
No president should ever be given the unilateral power to designate
people enemy combatants and then have them locked away indefinitely
with no prospect of being charged or tried.
The prison at Guantanamo is damaging American values, and our
reputation in the eyes of our enemies and our allies alike. It’s time
to end indefinite detention without charges and shut down Guantanamo.
Email your Members of Congress: Tell them to close the Guantanamo prison.
Last week, The New York Times reported that President Bush’s new
Defense Secretary Robert Gates favors closing Guantanamo and
transferring the prisoners there to the United States.
And Senator John McCain (R-AZ) said, if elected president, he “would
immediately close Guantanamo Bay, move all prisoners to Fort
Leavenworth and truly expedite the judicial proceedings in their cases.”
The Constitution makes the president subject to the rule of law. Its
drafters rejected dungeons and monarchies and chose a system of due
process and checks and balances.
Take action: Tell Congress to close Guantanamo
We’re asking you to consider throwing a get-together with a few of your family,
friends, and neighbors for Barack Obama on March 31.
This is the easiest way you can help our grassroots campaign reach out to people
across the country with our message of hope and change.
This is all you have to do:
  • Bring a few of your friends together on March 31 in your living room
    to talk about the challenges we are facing as a community; as a country.
  • Use your computer or phone to listen to Barack live in Iowa.
  • Watch the DVD we’ll send you with a special message from Barack to help
    your friends learn more about him and what our grassroots campaign is all about.
  • Talk about what you can do as a community to be a part of this campaign.
We want you to bring people together to learn more about this campaign and, ultimately,
to go out and share Barack’s message with others in your community.
We’ve set up several resources to help you along the way.
President Barack Obama
tim | Everything... | Tuesday, March 6th, 2007
 ”Barack Obama has what it takes. “Obama  He provides a bridge between conservative ideas and liberal traditions.  He inspires America with his intelligence, charisma, and plain-spoken honesty.  He has the wisdom and humility to build a cabinet which includes the best and brightest in our nation.  He intends to reconnect America with traditions of civic-engagement and hope.  His calls for equity, economic justice, and fair play…   will revitalize the American dream.
       Barack stands with the vast majority of Americans who oppose the graft and corruption we have suffered for too long.  The war of choice in Iraq has precipitated deficits, death, and dishonor for America.  Mr. Obama’s leadership can restore credibility, repair our reputation, and allow us to rejoin the community of nations.  His populist campaign can win this election and turn our nation around.  He is a contender.  He has integrity.  And he may well be our best shot at victory.”
