We could end the war in Iraq with the stroke of a pen…

tim | Everything... | Friday, April 27th, 2007

A piece of paper will soon be placed on George Bush’s desk in the Oval Office.

By picking up a pen and signing his name to it, he could end the war in Iraq.

The House and Senate united and passed a bill that would provide for our troops now and begin a redeployment from Iraq to bring them home.

We’re just one signature away from ending the tragic mistake that has cut short thousands of American lives, cost tens of billions of dollars, and destroyed America’s global moral leadership. But only if the president signs the bill.

I opposed this war from the beginning, and I would sign the bill to end it in a heartbeat.

If you would too, please take a moment to tell someone just how simple it would be to end this war:

All of the politics, all of the spin, all of the rhetoric means very little today.

The overwhelming majority of Americans want this war to end. The president must follow them.

America is one signature away.

Rudy Giuliani should be ashamed.

tim | Everything... | Thursday, April 26th, 2007

Rudy Giuliani should be ashamed.

The former New York City Mayor is politicizing September 11th in his 2008 presidential bid. Here’s what he said at a recent campaign stop in New Hampshire:

“If a Democrat is elected president in 2008, America will be at risk for another terrorist attack on the scale of Sept. 11, 2001… Never ever again will this country ever be on defense waiting for (terrorists) to attack us if I have anything to say about it. And make no mistake, the Democrats want to put us back on defense!”

I won’t let this wannabe Republican nominee get away with remarks like these. Send a message to Rudy’s campaign headquarters and tell him to stop politicizing 9/11:

http://www.democrats.org/TellGiuliani

More than anyone, Rudy should understand the offensive meaning behind his remarks. When he stood at ground zero that tragic day, there weren’t any Republicans or Democrats — only Americans.

After trying to convince everyone that he was “America’s Mayor,” he now shows this sort of “leadership.”

I will not sit quietly while he takes the fallen heroes of September 11, 2001 to the campaign trail with him. It might win over the Republican Party, but it won’t win over the American people.

Rudy should know better.

Join me and send a message to Rudy’s headquarters and tell him that our country deserves better from a presidential candidate:

http://www.democrats.org/TellGiuliani

President Bush, not the Democratic Party, failed our country by never capturing the true culprit of the 9/11 attacks: Osama bin Laden.

Now, Rudy thinks he can take a page from President Bush and Dick Cheney’s playbook, using fearmongering to gin up support. The American people didn’t buy this sort of garbage in the 2006 midterm elections, and they’re not going to buy it in 2008.

Show Rudy — and all Americans — that the Democratic Party won’t stand for this sort of attack. We’re delivering this petition personally to the Giuliani for President campaign headquarters, so give Rudy a piece of your mind.

Demand an apology now:

Sincerely,

Gov. Howard Dean, M.D.

Freedom of Speech and Corporate Media in America

tim | Everything... | Thursday, April 26th, 2007

One would think:
the impeachment of a Vice President,
conflicting financial interests of a Vice President
a Vice President who lobbies for torture
or a President who has betrayed his constitutional duties and this nation….
would be news!

If we still had a free press in America, it would certainly be news.

But what we have is a corporate press, owned and controlled by the Fortune 500.
Since these elites are the same people who put George and Dick in office…  our news reflects the GOP party line.  (Which has been hijacked by between 3% and 14% of America.)  What Eisenhower warned us about has become reality.

There are alternatives, but if you listen to broadcast news… or glean your news from the US wire services, the “news” you receive only vaguely resembles the facts.
A sad commentary on what we have become, with these lawless hacks in charge.

“Signing Statements” have no legal foundation in America

tim | Everything... | Thursday, April 19th, 2007

“George W. Bush’s “signing statements,” used to nullify key provisions of new laws, are anathema to liberals and conservatives alike.  His arrogant pronouncements that he will “not be bound by limits on his power” are strikingly imperial in tone, and absolutely inappropriate within the constrants imposed by our representative form of government.”
If Mr. Bush continues to break the law, he must be impeached.  That he includes so-called “signing statements” is irrelevant. Even the president of the United States must stand before our constituitonal mandates and be judged accordingly.  This president is guilty of crimes, misdemeanors, and a felonious assault upon our constitutional foundations.  He must be held accoutable for his hubris, arrogance, and treason.

TERRORISM IS A TACTIC NOT AN ENEMY

tim | Everything... | Thursday, April 19th, 2007

There is no war on terror.  Terror is a tactic.
The ”war on terror” rhetoric was used by
these guys as a convenient tool to misuse
our military in a corporate bid for the
occupation and exploitation of Iraq.
Our occupation of Iraq in order to enforce no-bid
cost-plus contracts for corrruption has nothing
to do with 9-11.  Even Bush admits that.

Simple history.  It is time to face facts.
Delusions and self-deception may be comfortable
now, but they will be difficult to explain to your grandkids.

The brave men whose lives were sacrificed in this bid for corporate hegemony via a
wrong-headed revival of colonialism, are a tragedy. Their self-sacrifice is heroic, but
their betrayal by this administration is a burden we no longer need to carry.

It is time to fix that problem.  And 2008 is too long to wait.

Let me introduce Mr. Habeas Corpus

tim | Everything... | Wednesday, April 18th, 2007

FindHabeas.com

You may have already seen him. As an unflagging champion of justice and due process of law, Habeas has been looking out for us all. Now he needs us to look out for him before the rights he has been protecting for centuries are lost forever.
As part of the ACLU community, we wanted you to be the first to learn about our Find Habeas outreach effort and the ACLU Campaign to Restore Our Constitutional Rights.
Our goal is to engage as many people as possible in our campaign to find Habeas Corpus and restore him to his rightful place in the Constitution. We know that once the public learns all the facts, the majority won’t support laws that run counter to long-held Constitutional principles.
That is where you come in. Your involvement — your voice, your network of friends and family — is critical to this effort.
Please visit our Find Habeas website and find out how you can add your voice to this effort. Tell your friends. Check out the blog. Download stickers and postcards. Get involved.

Mr. Cheney is dangerous.

tim | Everything... | Monday, April 2nd, 2007

Mr. Cheney is dangerous.  Congress should remove him.
Regardless of his motives…
Cheney’s misuse of our troops, betrayal of our people, and failure to honor constitutional mandates is rank treason
and he must be impeached, removed, and prosecuted.
this cannot stand.

Cheny’s arrogance, malfeasance, and incompetence have sacrificed our nation’s reputation, credibility, and honor.   In this sordid abuse office, hundreds of thousands have suffered or died needlessly while vast resources have been wasted.  This travesty must come to an end.  We cannot wait for 2008.
